In the United States alone, there are more than six hundred teams throughout over fifty leagues that refer to themselves as semi-professional or minor league football teams. Player experience varies between high school, college, and professional players. Because the majority of these players are not paid for their time on the field, they show up at practice and on game day simply for the love of the game. Not only are they not paid, but they are often required to purchase their own equipment, transportation, and lodging. A lucky few will get the opportunity to shine in front of scouts and be selected to move up to the (paid) professional ranks.

It is the intent of the Gulf Coast Football Association (GCFA) to provide opportunity and challenge to semi-professional football teams to take a giant step forward and adjust their team and player attitude to reflect the professional attitude that the GCFA represents.

Walk 4 Lupus a Success!!

The Gulf Coast Football Association continues to contribute their time and efforts to amazing and inspiring causes in their local community by participating in the 2009 "Walk 4 Lupus" at Discovery Green in Houston, Texas.  The Gulf Coast Football Association once again is reaching out with their compassion and ability to show up when needed as team and family members came together to volunteer and help this great cause.  Led by the Commissioner Gary Hodges along side the Montgomery County Thunderkats, Texas Red Raiders and Texas Wolverines it was a success.

The Thunderkats were in full force as they were volunteers to help walkers walk in the designated paths and helped break down tents after the walk was finished.  The GCFA would like to thank all the volunteers, walkers and donations that made this years "Walk 4 Lupus" a great success.  The GCFA has decided to make this a yearly event and has applied as a member and sponsor for the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter and El Paso Branch of the Lupus Foundation of America.

On Friday night, The GCFA Networks "The Sports Hour", had Flodrika Ray and her family as special guests of the show because Flodrika was diagnosed with Lupus at the young age of 11.  Now, at the age of 17 Flodrika is making great strides in her life and is a big part of the Lupus foundation.  They came on the show to tell there story and increase awareness for Lupus.  The Ray family were special guests at the Texas Beast vs. Montgomery Co. Thunderkats on Saturday and will be honorary guests at the 2009 Gulf Coast Football Association Super Bowl.

The Gulf Coast Football Association has joined a great cause in The Lupus Foundation of America.  The GCFA will be actively involved in fundraising and volunteering to help increase awareness of Lupus among health professionals and the public.  Each GCFA team has a link to raise money and to join next month's "Walk 4 Lupus" on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at Discovery Green Park.  Walk starts at 8:00 am.

The Gulf Coast Football Association takes pride in there players and coaches that work together and help strengthen our local communites by volunteering there time and having an active part in the community and with our youth.

The GCFA would like to applaud these special players as they devoted there time and efforts with there local youth football club.  Jeremy "Debo" Steward (Texas Wolverines), Starsky Long (former Wolverine, Firewalker and now Texas Red Raider) and Robert Mottu (Texas Wolverines).  These players are part of The Bay Area Football League that is one of Houston's oldest and most respected leagues.  The BAFL has been around since 1977.  BAFL has provided Youth Football, Drill and Cheer activities for over 30 years.

Jeremy Steward is the Booster Club President of the Magnolia Park Sharks.  Jeremy has led this Booster Club as one of the finest little league clubs in Houston for the past few years with his leadership and football knowledge he is respected at his position.  Starsky Long and Robert Mottu both bring there football expertise as coaches for the Sharks.  Long as the head coach, led the Senior team to a playoff birth in 2008.  Mottu as defensive coordinator, had one of the best defenses in the Sophomore division for the Sharks.
